Japanese Akitainu Health Testing

Yakumo Sou is proud to partner with the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA), Embark and Laboklin for our dogs health screenings.

 

If we truly consider ourselves "Breeders" or "Preservationists", we must prioritize health above all else. Without a solid healthy foundation, our show dogs and our pets have a higher risk of living their lives with complications. There are still countries & kennels in the world that do not health test their dogs. Many breeders continue to import dogs with a 'stab in the dark' approach with regards to health.

 

If you are a newcomer to the breed, ALWAYS ask for health testing results for parents of a litter. Do not just take their word for it when they say that the parents are health tested, ask for copies and be able to interpret the results. Specific dogs health test results can be searched for on the OFA Website here. Ask for the dogs' registration names and check yourself. Many kennels can look good online, but often times they are out to make money on this breed rather than helping to improve them. We have well established backyard breeders in North America so be cautious when doing your research. Ideally, both parents will have their CHIC Number. The OFA created the Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) by partnering with participating parent clubs to research and maintain information on the health issues prevalent in specific breeds. They have established a recommended protocol for breed-specific health screenings. Dogs tested in accordance with that protocol are recognized with a CHIC number and certification.
